STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was defeated by Viterbo University by a score of 78-39 today at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Tip-off Tournament in Berg Gym.
The Saints fall to 0-2 on the young season. The V-Hawks, a NAIA school, improve to 4-1 on the year. The Saints lost against Viterbo in this same tournament two years ago.
CSS was without #Jess Nichols# (So.-Stillwater, Minn.) due to injury and #Katie Christensen# (Jr.-Elk River, Minn.) was not able to play, so the Saints were without two scorers. Viterbo would score the first 10 points of the game. The Saints had nine turnovers before #Laura Amys# (Fr.-South Range, Wis./Superior) put CSS on the board five minutes into the game. It was a 23-6 Viterbo lead before the Saints went on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 25-13 with a little less than seven minutes left before halftime. However, the V-Hawks would out-score the Saints 20-8 over the final six minutes of the half to take a 45-21 lead.
The Saints shot just 32-percent from the field in the first half, while the V-Hawks shot 53-percent. CSS was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, but committed 21 turnovers.
The second half wasn't much better as the lead was in the 30s for the majority of the half with biggest deficit being 41 points. Viterbo went on to win by a score of 78-39. The V-Hawks will face UW-Stevens Point in championship game tomorrow. The Pointers defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) 71-34.
The Saints shot 27-percent for the game and committed 33 turnovers. The V-Hawks shot 53-percent from the field. Viterbo had a 52-14 scoring advantage in the paint.
#Kirsten Haukom# (Jr.-Marshall, Minn.) had 14 points to lead the Saints. She also had a team-high five rebounds and four assists. Abilene Koch led all-scorers with 18 points for the V-Hawks.
The Saints will face the MSOE in the consolation game of the Pointer Tip-off tomorrow afternoon. The action begins at 1 p.m. in Berg Gym.
