DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell tonight by a score of 83-63 to rival University of Wisconsin-Superior at Reif Gym.
The Saints are now 1-1 this season, while the Yellowjackets improve to 1-1. CSS swept the Yellowjackets last year.
Both teams exchanged baskets to begin the game, but Superior went on a 14-1 run to take an 18-5 lead with 11 minutes left before halftime. The margin hovered around 13 until the Yellowjackets went on an 11-0 run to take a 41-17 lead with two minutes left. The halftime score was 41-19 in favor of Superior.
The Yellowjackets out-scored the Saints 18-4 in the paint and had 10 second-chance points. St. Scholastica was limited to just 25-percent shooting in the half, while the Yellowjackets shot 47-percent.
The Saints out-scored Superior in the second half, but not by enough. The lead only got down 18 on a couple of occasions as the Yellowjackets prevailed 83-63.
CSS shot 64-percent in the second half to finish at 47-percent for the game. The Yellowjackets finished with a field goal percentage of 46-percent for the game. Superior out-rebounded the Saints 40-26 and out-scored CSS 20-5 in second-chance points.
#Justin Nelson# (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Marshall) had 16 points off the bench to lead the Saints. #Danny Schmitz# (So.-Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson) added 10 points. #Mike MacDonald# (Sr.-Two Harbors, Minn.) had a team-high five rebounds. Dwight Hill had a game-high 17 points for the Yellowjackets.
The Saints will be back on the road Tuesday when they will face Hamline University. The tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
