DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell this evening against Lakehead University, out of Thunder Bay, Ontario, by a score of 71-51 at Reif Gym.
The Saints got off to a good start as they jumped out to a 12-6 lead. Senior transfer #Justin Nelson# (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Gogebic CC) had nine of the first 12 points. A #Danny Schmitz# (So.-Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson) three-pointer gave CSS a 20-16 lead halfway through the first half.
However, the Thunderwolves would go on a 16-4 run to close out the half and take a 37-28 lead at halftime. Lakehead shot 46-percent from the field in the half, while the Saints shot 39-percent. The Thunderwolves bench had a 13-4 advantage.
The teams traded baskets the first five minutes of the second half until the Thunderwolves went on runs of 8-0 and 9-0 in the second half to pull away and win by a score of 71-51. Lakehead shot 42-percent for the game, while the Saints shot 33-percent
#Troy Miller# (Sr.-Stillwater, Minn./Mesabi Range CC) had 12 points to lead the Saints in scoring. Miller and #Kyle Allen# (Sr.-Black River Falls, Wis.) each had a team-high six rebounds. Justin Nelson had 11 points, all in the first half. Kiraan Posey had a game-high 26 points to lead the Thunderwolves.
The Saints will open the regular season on Tuesday, November 18th at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
