NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team was defeated by Carleton College this afternoon by a score of 2-0 in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.
This was the fifth meeting between the two schools all-time, but the first since the 1993 season. The Saints came into today with a 2-1-1 record against the Knights, including having won the last two.
The Saints fell behind early as the Knights came down the right sideline centered the ball, the ball was then misplayed and Carleton's Merritt Swain struck a shot that went inside the left post, just below the crossbar to make the score 1-0 in the seventh minute. The Knights dominated possession and out-shot the Saints 13-1 in the first half.
In the second half, the Saints' best opportunity came in the 55th minute when #Sarah Bartlette# (Jr.-East Grand Forks, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's) had a shot and the Knights' Kate Trenerry had to make a diving save. Unfortunately for CSS that would be the only save she made all day.
Carleton added insurance in the 79th minute as Nikky Bloom scored to make the final score 2-0. Carleton now moves on to the second round to face the University of Puget Sound. That match will take place Sunday in Tacoma, Wash.
#Erin Olejnicak# (Fr.-Brainerd, Minn.) was very strong in net for the Saints as she had 11 saves in loss. #Ellyn Litecky# (Jr.-Duluth, Minn./East) had the other shot attempt for the Saints. Carleton finished with a 27-2 shot advantage.
The Saints finish with an overall record of 20-3. The 20 wins are the most in program history. St. Scholastica does have to say goodbye to three seniors, #Robin Johnson# (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Marshall), #Kristen Stangel# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn.), and #Sara Olson# (Sr.-Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC). Johnson leaves CSS as the school's all-time leading scorer. Johnson finishes with 65 career goals and 168 career points.
