MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team scored two goals in a span of 12 seconds to take a one goal lead with a little over one minute to play only to have the fifth-ranked University of St. Thomas Tommies score a goal with 27 seconds left as the game ended in a 3-3 tie tonight at St. Thomas Ice Arena.
The Saints are now 1-1-1 this season, while the Tommies, who defeated UW-Superior last night, are now 1-0-1. CSS is now 6-16-2 all-time against the Tommies.
The Saints scored first tonight when #Jordan Chong# (Jr.-North Vancouver, B.C.) scored his first goal of the season with 7:54 left in the first period. #Trevor Geiger# (Sr.-Salmon Arm, B.C.) and #Matt Stengl# (Sr.-East Grand Forks, Minn.) had the assists. It didn't take long for the Tommies to tie it up as Tom Knutson scored 38 seconds later.
St. Thomas scored the lone goal of the second period when Rob Johnson scored with less than seven minutes left in the period. The score remained 2-1 Tommies until Trevor Geiger (Salmon Arm, British Columbia/Salmon Arm (BCHL)) scored a power-play goal with 1:13 remaining to tie the score. Geiger has six points in the last two nights. #AJ Tucker# (Sr.-Fort Frances, Ont.) and #Jordan Baird# (Jr.-Port McNeill, B.C.) had the assists.
Then before you could blink the Saints took control of the puck after the face-off and Jordan Chong (North Vancouver, British Columbia/Dryden (SIJHL)) got his own rebound and put the puck into the net 12 seconds later to give CSS a 3-2 lead with a 1:01 remaining. #Kyle Luschinski# (Sr.-Headingley, Man.) had the assist. However, with the extra attacker on the ice, the Tommies would tie it up on an Andrew Kappers goal with 27 seconds left in regulation.
In overtime, the Saints out-shot the Tommies 5-1, but could not capitalize as the game ended in a 3-3 tie. St. Thomas had a 31-30 shot advantage. The Saints were 1-for-3 on the power-play, while the Tommies were 0-for-6. #Steve Bounds# (Sr.-Airdrie, Alta.) had 28 saves for the Saints, while Tyler Chestnut had 27 saves for the Tommies.
The Saints will have their home opener next Friday when they host Augsburg College at Mars Lakeview Arena. The action starts at 7:05 p.m.
