WINONA, Minn. – Senior captain #Trevor Geiger# (Sr.-Salmon Arm, B.C.) scored three of St. Scholastica's first four goals as the Saints won going away 9-1 over Saint Mary's University tonight at SMU Ice Arena.
The Saints even up their mark on the season at 1-1. This was the season opener for the Cardinals as they fall to 0-1. The Saints are now 10-12-2 all-time against Saint Mary's and have won the last two meetings.
Geiger netted his first of the game with four minutes left in the first period when he scored an unassisted short-handed goal to make 1-0 at the first intermission. Geiger then scored again on the power-play six minutes into the second period. #Jordan Chong# (Jr.-North Vancouver, B.C.) and #Carter Davis# (Fr.-Moose Jaw, Sask.) had the assists.
The Cardinals cut the lead to 2-1 halfway through the second period with an even-handed goal by Steve Murphy. #Matt Stengl# (Sr.-East Grand Forks, Minn.) scored his first goal of the season 43 seconds later to extend the lead back to two goals. Geiger and #Dustin DeGagne# (Jr.-Winnipeg, Man.) had the assists.
Geiger added the hat trick 39 seconds after that goal to make it 4-1 CSS. The hat trick was Geiger's first in his career. #Joey Martini# (Sr.-Calgary, Alta.) scored his second goal of the season on the power-play with a little over two minutes left in the second period to make it 5-1 at the second intermission. DeGagne and #Austin Brown# (Fr.-Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) had the assists.
#Jeremy Dawes# (Fr.-Winnipeg, Man.) scored his first collegiate goal, short-handed, 6:03 into the third period to make the score 6-1. #Jeff Gagnon# (Jr.-Quesnel, B.C.) had the assist. Gagnon scored his first goal of the season with less than six minutes left in the contest. #Chris Meagher# (Jr.-Victoria, B.C.) and #Sam Yearsley# (Fr.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) has the assists.
#AJ Tucker# (Sr.-Fort Frances, Ont.) scored his first goal of the season with less than two minutes left and Carter Davis (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Central Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored his first collegiate goal on the power-play with 56 seconds left as the Saints went on to win 9-1. The nine goals by the Saints are the most since a 9-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stout during the 2005-06 season.
#Steve Bounds# (Sr.-Airdrie, Alta.) had 23 saves between the pipes for the Saints. Greg Moore had 42 saves in the loss. CSS out-shot Saint Mary's 51-24. The Saints were 3-for-7 on the power-play, while the Cardinals were 0-for-5. There were 13 combined penalties in the contest.
The Saints will face another Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) school tomorrow night when they travel to face the University of St. Thomas. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
