DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team defeated Northland College 1-0 this afternoon on Senior Day at Saints Field.
The Saints honored three seniors: #Robin Johnson# (
Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Marshall), #Sara Olson# (
Sr.-Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC), and #Kristen Stangel# (
Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn.). The victory gave this senior class 66 wins in their career, which is the second-most by a senior class in team history.
CSS controlled the match out-shooting the LumberJills 27-2 in the contest, including 13-0 in the second half. After a scoreless first half, the Saints had a goal disallowed in the second half due to an offside call.
However, the Saints did get on the scoreboard in the 60th minute when #Sarah Bartlette# (
Jr.-East Grand Forks, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's) placed a perfect corner kick and #Jen Krokum# (
Jr.-Duluth, Minn./East) headed it into the net for her 15th goal of the season to make it 1-0. It marked the third straight match that Krokum has scored a goal. The Saints held on from there to win their 57th straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season match.
#Erin Olejnicak# (
Fr.-Brainerd, Minn.) had to make just one save to improve to 7-0-0 on the year. Brittany Ballwanz had eight saves in the loss for the Jills.
CSS ends the regular season with an 18-2-0 overall record and finishes 14-0-0 in the UMAC. The Saints are currently on a 13-match winning streak. The LumberJills fall to 9-7-2 overall and finish 7-5-2 in the conference. Northland will be the three-seed in next week's UMAC Postseason Tournament and will travel to Northwestern on Tuesday.
The Saints will host a UMAC Tournament Semifinal match at Saints Field against either the University of Minnesota-Morris or Crown College on Tuesday. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
