DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team came into tonight tied with Bethany Lutheran College for second place in the conference, but ended up in sole possession of second place with a 3-1 victory over the Vikings at Reif Gym.

The Saints improve to 15-11 overall and 10-3 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The Vikings fall to 13-15 overall and 9-4 in the conference. The Saints snap a three-match losing steak to the Vikings.

CSS took control early by going up 10-4 in the first set. The Saints led 23-13 until Bethany closed in at the end. The Saints hung on to win 25-23. CSS had a match-high 17 kills in that first set. The Saints took a 9-1 lead in the second set and never looked back to win by a score of 25-15. The Saints had their best hitting percentage (.448) of the match in the second set.

In the third set, St. Scholastica had a 20-15 advantage until the Vikings went on a 10-1 run to close out the set and win 25-21. It was all CSS in the fourth set as it did not trail and went on to win by a score of 25-11.

The Saints finished with 54 kills, which is the most this season in a UMAC match by CSS. #Amy Thompson# (Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) had a season-high 18 kills. #Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) added 16 kills and also had a team-high 16 digs. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 40 set assists and #Dustie Richardson# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway) had a block solo and two block assists.

The Saints will host Martin Luther College tomorrow for Senior Day in the regular season finale. The match will begin at 1 p.m. in Reif Gym.
