ASHLAND, Wis. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team won both matches tonight at the Northland College Triangular.
The Saints had an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup against the host ,Northland College, to start the night. The LumberJills still had an outside chance to make it into the UMAC Postseason Tournament, but the Saints put an end to that with a 3-1 victory.
Northland would lead the first set late, but the Saints rallied to win the set by a score of 27-25. The Jills tied it up by winning the second set by a score of 25-18. CSS then responded with its best set of the match in the third, winning by a score of 25-16 with a .243 attack percentage. The Saints then closed the match by taking the fourth set by a score of 25-15.
#Amy Thompson# (Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) and #Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) each had 11 kills to lead CSS. #Cassie Roden# (Sr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) had team-high 26 digs and #Dustie Richardson# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway) had three block solos and three block assists. The Jills fell to 12-16 overall and 5-7 in the conference.
St. Scholastica then faced Finlandia University in a non-conference match. The Saints had very little trouble with the Lions winning 3-0.
CSS had a match-high 15 kills in the first set to take it by a score of 25-21. The Saints came back with a 14-kill second set to win by a score of 25-18. CSS had a .275 attack percentage in the set. The Saints then closed out the match by winning the third set 25-15.
Shawna Varichak (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) had 11 kills and 17 digs to lead the Saints. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 21 set assists in the victory. The Lions fall to 12-18 overall. The two wins give the Saints a 14-11 overall record and they are now 9-3 in the UMAC.
The Saints return home this weekend for their final two matches of the regular season against Bethany Lutheran College on Friday night and Martin Luther College on Saturday afternoon. Both matches are critical as far as seeding is concerned for the UMAC Postseason Tournament. All three teams were tied for second place entering tonight. Friday night's match against Bethany Lutheran is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Reif Gym. Come dressed in your Halloween costumes for a chance to win $100.
