CSS MEN TAKE CONTROL OF THE UMAC WITH WIN AT MORRIS

MORRIS, Minn. – After suffering a tough loss yesterday, the St. Scholastica men's soccer team responded with its biggest win of the season today with a 2-1 victory at the University of Minnesota-Morris.

The Saints now control their own destiny on their way to an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship. CSS leads Morris by three points with just one more regular season match to play. The Cougars have two matches left against Presentation College. With a win against Northland College on Friday, the Saints will win their second straight regular season league crown and their fourth in the last five years.

St. Scholastica got on the scoreboard in the 37th minute when the Cougars were called for a penalty in the box. #Toby Peter# (So.-Spalt, Germany/U.S. Bach) then put the penalty kick into the back of the net to make the score 1-0. Less than four minutes later #Greg Doornink# (So.-Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) scored his first goal of the season to make it 2-0. Peter had the assist.

Less than three minutes after that, Morris cut the CSS lead in half with a goal from Brent Diggs to make it 2-1. The Cougars had an 8-7 shot advantage in the first half.

Both teams would get four shots off in the second half, but Morris did not get any on net as the Saints came away with a big 2-1 victory.

#Sam Reed# (Fr.-Eastbourne, England/Causeway) had three saves in net to get the win for CSS. Tyler Simpson had five saves in the loss for the Cougars. The Saints improve to 13-4-2 overall and 10-2-1 in the UMAC. The Cougars fall to 14-4-0 and 9-3-0 in the conference.

The Saints return home on Friday for the regular season finale against Northland College. The match will begin approximately at 3 p.m. following the women's match at Saints Field.
