DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team swept its third straight opponent at home this afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Presentation College on “Dig Pink Day” at Reif Gym.
The Saints teamed up with the Side Out Foundation in a nationwide event called “Dig Pink” to promote breast cancer awareness. All proceeds from today's match went directly to the Side Out Foundation. Fans received commemorative pink ribbon pins and players from both teams threw pink tie-dye t-shirts into the crowd.
CSS finished the opening set going on a 12-1 run to win by a score of 25-9. St. Scholastica had 16 kills in the first set. CSS then had its best set of the match in the second set with 17 kills and only one error for a hitting percentage of .516 to win by a score of 25-9.
The third set was the closest on the afternoon as it was tied 8-8 halfway through. CSS then went on a 10-2 run to close out the match and win by a score of 25-15. St. Scholastica finished with 48 kills, while limiting Presentation to just 23 kills. The 23 kills was a season-low by an opponent this season.
#Dustie Richardson# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway) and #Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) each had 13 kills to lead CSS. Varichak also led the team with 23 digs. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had a team-high 42 set assists.
St. Scholastica is 11-10 overall and is above .500 for the first time this season. CSS improves to 7-2 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). Presentation falls to 1-18 overall and 1-8 in the league. St. Scholastica is 17-0 all-time against Presentation.
The Saints go back on the road next week when they take on Northwestern College on Thursday night. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
