DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team had 24 block assists on its way to a three-set victory over the University of Minnesota-Morris tonight at Reif Gym.
The Saints get back to .500 on the season overall with a 10-10 record. They are also 6-2 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play. The Cougars drop to 7-12 overall and 2-6 in the UMAC. CSS improves to 13-1 against Morris all-time and has won eight straight in the series.
The Saints jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening set and went on to take it by a score of 25-14. St. Scholastica had a match-high 16 kills in the first set. The second set was 14-12 halfway through, until the Saints went on a 6-2 run to take a two-set lead, winning 25-16.
CSS closed out the match taking the third set thanks to its defense. The Saints had 12 block assists and one block solo in the set on its way to a 25-12 set win to take the match.
#Dustie Richardson# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway) had seven block assists and one block solo in the match. #Megan Baartman# (Jr.-Andover, Minn.) had six block assists. #Erin Niles# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn.) had three block assists and just needs four more to tie the program's career record held by LeAnn Berscheit ('03-'06). The 24 block assists and 14 total blocks is a season-high for CSS.
#Amy Thompson# (Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) and #Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) each had 11 kills to lead St. Scholastica. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 33 assists. Varichak also added 11 digs and #Cassie Roden# (Sr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) had a team-high 16 digs.
The Saints will host Presentation College tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Reif Gym. The Saints will be teaming up with the Side Out Foundation for “Dig Pink” Day to promote breast cancer awareness. Anyone who wears pink to the match will receive a coupon for a chance to win a pink CSS volleyball t-shirt. Fans will receive a commemorative pink ribbon pin upon entry. The players will also be throwing pink tie-dye t-shirts into the crowd during the pre-game introductions.
