DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team took care of Northland College tonight by a score of 3-0 at Reif Gym in the Burns Wellness Commons.
The Saints improve to 9-10 overall and 5-2 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The LumberJills fall to 10-13 overall and 3-4 in the conference. The Saints are now 34-1 all-time against the Jills and have swept them 24 times. The Saints are now 3-1 at home this season.
CSS pulled away midway through the first set, going on a 7-1 run to take the set by a score of 25-16. The Saints had their best hitting percentage (.407) of the match in the set. St. Scholastica was behind 12-10 in the second set before going on a 10-2 run to take the second set 25-18. The Saints had a match-high 16 kills in the set.
CSS was trailing for most of the third set, including being down 15-9 at one point. The Saints chipped away and tied the match at 24-24. After back-to-back serving errors, #Dustie Richardson# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway) had a kill and #Amy Thompson# (Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) had a serving ace to end it as the Saints won 27-25.
#Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) had 13 kills to lead St. Scholastica. Amy Thompson (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) added 12 kills. #Erin Niles# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn.) had a .778 attack percentage with seven kills and no errors. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 32 set-assists and #Cassie Roden# (Sr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) had 10 digs.
The Saints will host the University of Minnesota-Morris on Friday at Reif Gym. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
