DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team played a tough Augsburg College squad to a 1-1 tie this afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Saints Field.
The Auggies, who are ranked seventh in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Adidas West Region poll, struck first when Nick Anderson scored on a header in the 19th minute to make the score 1-0. The goal allowed by the Saints ended a team-record streak of 640 minutes and one second of not allowing a score.
CSS responded in the 32nd minute when #Dustin James# (So.-Superior, Wis.) received a cross from #Jermaine Dacres# (So.-Nottingham, England/Haywood) and put it past the keeper to tie it at 1-1. #Greg Doornink# (So.-Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) also assisted the goal. James has scored at least one goal in each of the last four matches.
The Saints controlled possession for much of the second half, but could not manage to find the back of the net. After 90 minutes of play the match went to overtime. In the first overtime, the Saints managed to get three shots off, but once again couldn't capitalize. In the second 10-minute overtime, St. Scholastica only got one shot off and it was off the mark as the match ended under near darkness in a 1-1 tie.
The Saints out-shot the Auggies 12-10 in the match. Augsburg did not get a shot off in either of the overtimes. #Sam Reed# (Fr.-Eastbourne, England/Causeway) had one save in net for the Saints as he has a record of 5-3-1 on the year. Donnie McCarthy had two saves for the Auggies.
CSS now has an overall record of 11-3-1, while the Auggies are 7-2-4 overall. The tie ends a five-match losing streak to the Auggies for the Saints and is the first tie in the series history. The Saints finish 2-2-1 against the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season.
The Saints return to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action on Friday when they travel to Crown College. The match is scheduled to begin at approximately 3 p.m. following the women's match.
