NEW ULM, Minn. – After losing a close match last night, the St. Scholastica volleyball team came out and defeated Martin Luther College this afternoon by a score of 3-1.
The Saints improve to 8-10 overall and 4-2 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The Knights fall to 8-12 overall and is also 4-2 in the UMAC. CSS is 24-12 all-time against the Knights and have won the last four matches.
After a close beginning to the first set the Saints pulled away late, going on a 7-1 run to take the set by a score of 25-19. Both St. Scholastica and Martin Luther had 12 kills in the set. CSS then had a rough second set, committing more errors that kills as the Knights evened up the match with 25-21 win.
The Saints then had their best set of the match in the third set with a .480 attack percentage as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead and won it by a score of 25-14. With the score 19-19 in the fourth set, the Saints took six of the last seven points to win the match by a score of 25-20. CSS had a match-high 16 kills in the fourth set.
#Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) had 13 kills to lead the Saints for the second consecutive day. #Amy Thompson# (Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) had 11 kills and #Megan Baartman# (Jr.-Andover, Minn.) added 10 kills. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 39 assists and #Cassie Roden# (Sr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) had a team-high 20 digs.
The Saints return home for three matches next week. The first match will be Wednesday night when they host Northland College at Reif Gym. The match begins at 7 p.m.
