MANKATO, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team suffered a close defeat tonight at Bethany Lutheran College, losing by a score of 3-2 at the North Gym of the Sports and Fitness Center.

The Saints fall to 7-10 overall and 3-2 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action. Bethany Lutheran improves to 8-11 overall and 4-1 in the conference. The Saints are just 3-10 all-time against the Vikings.

The Saints came out with a very effective first game with nine kills and only one attack error on its way to a 25-17 victory. CSS fell behind 8-3 in the second set, came back to tie it up, but still fell short by a score of 25-21.

The Saints trailed 16-13 in the third set, but then rattled off six straight points and took the third set by a score of 24-20. The fourth set was tight throughout, with neither team having a lead greater than three points. St. Scholastica had an 11-9 lead in the set, but for the most part, the Vikings held the advantage and took the set by a score of 27-25.

The Saints would not lead in the fifth-and-deciding set and fell by a score of 15-8. This is the third time this season CSS carried a two sets-to-one lead into the fourth set and lost that fourth set by going over regulation, and eventually lost the match.

#Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) led the Saints with 14 kills. Varichak broke the school record tonight for career attack attempts (4,401). #Amy Thompson# (Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) added 11 kills. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 38 set assists and #Cassie Roden# (Sr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) had 28 digs.

The Saints will face Martin Luther College tomorrow afternoon in New Ulm, Minn. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
