DULUTH, Minn. – Sophomore #Cody Sveiven# (So.-Coon Rapids, Minn.) had the hat trick today as the St. Scholastica men's soccer team took down Bethany Lutheran College by a score of 5-0 at Saints Field.
The Saints improve to 10-3-0 overall and 7-1-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The Vikings fall to 4-7-1 overall and 2-6-0 in the UMAC. CSS is now 9-1-0 all-time against the Vikings, winning the last nine contests.
It didn't take long for the Saints to score as in the eighth minute, Sveiven redirected a shot by #Greg Doornink# (So.-Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0 Saints. It was Sveiven again in the 17th minute as he put the Saints up 2-0. #Bryan Olson# (Fr.-South St. Paul, Minn.) and #Rob Miller# (Jr.-Duluth, Minn./East) had the assists.
St. Scholastica went up 3-0 when #Dustin James# (So.-Superior, Wis.) struck the ball past the goalkeeper in the 23rd minute. #Asos Amin# (Fr.-Vasteras, Sweden) and #Brandon Stemwedel# (Fr.-Grand Rapids, Minn.) had the assists. Stemwedel then got a feed from James a little over seven minutes later and put the ball in the net as the Saints took a 4-0 lead.
The final goal of the match came just 3:37 into the second half as Sveiven added his third goal of the contest to give him the hat trick and make the score 5-0.
The Saints out-shot the Vikings 24-5 in the match. #Sam Reed# (Fr.-Eastbourne, England/Causeway) had three saves to improve to 5-3-0 and earn his third consecutive shutout. CSS has now shut out opponents in five straight matches.
The Saints will be at home again tomorrow when they square off with Martin Luther College. The match will take place at approximately 2 p.m. following the women's match.
