Jordan Baird cycles the puck around net in the Saints' shutout win.
Box Score
In a game that often looked like the Saints were on the power play, St. Scholastica peppered the Northland College net with 76 shots on goal in a 6-0 shutout victory over the visiting LumberJacks at the Mars Lakeview Arena on Tuesday evening.
Though the Saints (7-9-2) had a 28 to three advantage in shots the opening period, they only took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission as 'Jacks goalie Daniel McIntosh put up a strong front in a harried 20 minutes for the freshman netminder letting in only
Jameson Lundquist (Superior, Wis./Fairbanks (NAHL))'s goal with less than three minutes remaining in the period.
Jordan Baird (Port McNeill, British Columbia/Victoria (BCHL)) got the puck behind McIntosh 5:31 into the second period to double the St. Scholastica lead, then A.J. Tucker netted the first of two on the night with a power play goal at the 16:20 mark to put Northland (3-12-0) behind 3-0 as the two teams headed to the second intermission.
Scoring once on 28 shots in the first, then twice on 26 shots in the second, the Saints continued the trend in the third by scoring three times on only 22 shots.
Kelly Reynolds (Parksville, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley (BCHL)) scored his first of the year at the 4:17 mark, then
Joey Martini (Calgary, Alberta/Canmore (AJHL)) cashed in only 1:38 later to push the lead to 5-0. Tucker scored his second of the game at the 11:40 mark in the third to close out the scoring for the Saints.
Tucker added an assist to go along with his two goals for a three point night, while Baird and Reynolds both added pairs of assists to also tally three point nights.
In goal for the Saints,
Steve Bounds (Airdrie, Alberta/Powell River (BCHL)) easily turned away the 10 shots he faced over 60 minutes of action to pick up the win. His best save was saved for last as he turned away a break-away in the final minutes to preserve the shutout for the Saints, only their second of the season.
Tuesday's win keeps the Lake Superior Cup — awarded to the winner of the Saints versus LumberJacks match-up — in the St. Scholastica trophy case, as it has been after each of the seven games between the two schools since their first outing in the 1999-2000 season.
The Saints have the upcoming weekend off before heading out on the road for games at nationally-ranked No. 9 Wis.-Stout and No. 5 Wis.-River Falls on January 25th and 26th.
