Brought up right by his mother, he'd be the last one to toot his own horn.
But Coach David Staniger now sits tied atop the career wins list at St. Scholastica with Saturday night's 97-51 blowout victory in St. Bonifacius, Minn., over the host Purple Storm from Crown College.
His 92 career wins as the Saints head coach ties him with John Nachtsheim, the leader of the Saints program from 1985 to 1993.
Staniger was able to play all 17 players on his roster in the win at Crown. Five players scored in double-digits and the non-starters contributed 49 points in coming off the bench.
Crown (4-7, 1-2 UMAC) tied the Saints (4-9, 2-1 UMAC) at 2-2 in the opening minutes but the race was on from there.
Over the closing minutes of the opening half St. Scholastica had a 10-0 run then ended the half on an 11-0 stretch to pull ahead to a 48-21 lead at the intermission.
The second half wasn't much better for Crown as the Saints, now with their starters mostly sitting on the bench, again outscored the Purple Storm, this time by a 49-30 margin, pushing their final winning margin to a whopping 46 points.
St. Scholastica doubled up Crown down low, out scoring the Storm 29 to 14 in the paint. They also ripped down 36 rebounds on the night compared with only 23 by the hosts.
While holding all of the Crown players to only single-digit scoring totals, five Saints reached double-figures.
Troy Miller (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) had a game-high 17 points followed by Eric Langdon (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior HS)'s 14, Jesse Taylor (Superior, Wis./Maranatha Academy)'s 12, and Brady Zubke (Laporte, Minn./Park Rapids Area HS) and Danny Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS)' 11 points apiece.
Langdon led all players in rebounds with nine to help carve out the middle for the blue and gold. Zubke came away with seven boards and Miller picked up five.
For the game the Saints shot 54 percent from the field while limiting Crown to only 29 percent.
Next up for the Saints will be visits from Presentation College (Fri., Jan. 18) and Minn.-Morris (Sat., Jan. 19) when CSS will try to push Staniger to the top of the heap with a win at the Reif Gymnasium in the Burns Wellness Commons.
