Box Score What looked like a rout early on turned into a tight contest Saturday afternoon as the Saints scored three times within 10 minutes early in the first half but wouldn't find the net again in a 3-1 victory over Upper Midwest Athletic Conference foe Northwestern College at Griggs Field on the campus of UM-Duluth.
St. Scholastica (6-2-1, 4-0-0 UMAC) opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the game with a Shannon Kresky (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) goal off a pass from the right sideline by Victoria Witrack.
Sara Olson (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC) scored the next two for the Saints, her first an unassisted goal in the 14th minute and then her second off a Courtney McKenzie pass in the 20th minute.
The opening 45 minutes was dominated by St. Scholastica as they held a 13 to zero shots advantage over the Eagles and thwarted nearly every attempted rush upfield Northwestern tried.
Play was much more back and fourth in the second half — even though the Saints out shot the Eagles eight to three — and when Northwestern's Nicole Seviola nailed a penalty kick into the bottom right corner to trim the lead to 3-1 at the 54:31 mark, a game that early on threatened to allow head coach Dave Reyelts to freely substitute from his long bench turned into a taught affair with his starters and top subs playing nearly all of the final 45 minutes.
Kelly Momsen (Austin, Minn./Austin HS) made two saves in goal for the Saints allowing only the penalty kick to get by her. In defeat, Northwestern's Karen Kruse made nine saves.
With their victory, the Saints remain in first place within the conference following the conclusion of weekend action. UM-Morris, whom the Saints beat in Morris, Minn., on Sept. 15, is a game behind in the UMAC standings at 3-1-0.
