Box Score The final game of the 2006 season was an epic battle between the Saints and Eagles from Northwestern College which the Saints won 1-0 in double-overtime to capture the UMAC postseason title.
On Saturday afternoon at Griggs Field on the campus of UM-Duluth, the two teams faced off for the first time since that encounter and again with the same result, a 1-0 victory by the Saints, but this time with less drama as the game was won in regulation time.
St. Scholastica (6-1-0, 4-0-0 UMAC) nabbed the lead over Northwestern (3-4-1, 2-0-1) at the 19:54 mark on a goal by Toby Peter (Spalt, Germany/J.S. Bach Gymnasium), his fourth goal in the team's last three games. Peter's score would also prove to be his third game-winning goal in each of the past three games.
Neither team mustered many scoring opportunities the remainder of the opening half and the Saints were able to carry their one goal lead into the intermission.
The Eagles had a scoring chance early on in the second half but the Eagle shot sailed high over the crossbar allowing the Saints to maintain their slim lead.
St. Scholastica began to tilt the field in their favor for much of the final 45 minutes generating seven shots and a pair of scoring chances but it was the Eagles who came down toward the final buzzer with one last shot off a set piece throw-in.
Though Saints goalie Adam Whitehead (Pickering, Ont./Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School) was knocked off his feet while the ball was in the air, the Saints defense headed the ball out of harms way and the Saints picked up their second one goal win over Northwestern and kept themselves atop the UMAC standings with an undefeated conference mark.
Whitehead picked up the win in goal for St. Scholastica and added another shutout to his team record total which now stands at 23 games.
