Box Score St. Scholastica earned a hard fought 2-1 win over visiting UW-River Falls in the late game on Saturday of the 4th annual Advantage Emblem Cup.
The Saints opened the scoring early on a set piece with a tremendous header by Angie Groh (Andover, Minn./St. Francis HS) that snuck under the crossbar in the top left corner of the River Falls goal. Sarah Bartlette (East Grand Forks, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's) lofted a high floater off a corner kick that Groh skied above the crowd for to put the Saints ahead of the Falcons just six minutes into the game.
In a very aggressive game for both teams, the Saints were able to cling to their one-goal lead with time winding down to the final buzzer in the second half.
River Falls, though, pressured hard throughout the entire second half—out shooting the Saints eight to two—and Jen Terry finally knocked one by St. Scholastica keeper Kelly Momsen (Austin, Minn./Austin HS) in the 85th minute to knot things at one apiece.
But the Saints turned the tables with offensive pressure of their own and with less than three minutes to play, Bartlette broke in from the left side line on Falcons keeper Emily Stieler, dribbled past her, and buried a shot into the net to give St. Scholastica the lead once again.
River Falls (1-1-0) mounted one last push but a Momsen save ended the second comeback hopes of the Falcons and gave the Saints (1-0-1) their first win of the season.
Momsen, Groh, and Bartlette from St. Scholastica earned All-Tournament honors in voting by the coaches while Julie Sperstad and Dianna Hermes picked up tournament honors for the Falcons.
