SAINTS SETTLE FOR TIE IN OPENER

The Saints (0-0-1) will have to wait another day to score their first goal of the 2007 season following Friday's 0-0 double-overtime tie with St. Catherine's (0-0-1) in the opening game of the Advantage Emblem Cup at Saints Field in Duluth.

Defensively, though, St. Scholastica picked up where they left off last season when they allowed only 10 goals throughout an 18-3-1 campaign.

Goalkeeper Kelly Momsen (Austin, Minn./Austin HS) recorded her 15th career shutout making three saves against St. Kate's that kept her Saints in the game on an overcast and uncharacteristically chilly August day on the hilltop.

St. Scholastica took 24 shots in the game with 11 making it on frame but goalkeeper Elizabeth Schreiner kept her Wildcats even with Momsen and the Saints through 110 minutes of action.

Despite their 24 to seven advantage in shots, the St. Scholastica offense failed to pressure the Wildcats as much as head coach Dave Reyelts would have liked. “I was disappointed with the pace of our play,” the three-time UMAC Coach of the Year said. “We made slow decisions and weren't very inventive when we had possession which made us easier to defend,” Reyelts added.

Reyelts, though, gave a lot of credit to the improved play of Steve Bellis' Wildcats squad. “For a team that finished with only a couple of wins last year in Steve's first season, his team came out in their opening game with great effort through to the final whistle. That's not going to be a two-win team this year,” complimented Reyelts. “As for our team, well, if we come out and play like this against River Falls (on Saturday), they'll handle us,” he added.

Saturday afternoon's 4 p.m. opponent, UW-River Falls, took a 2-0 win over Northland College in the late game on Friday afternoon. St. Kate's and Northland lead off day two of the Advantage Cup with a 2 p.m. match at Saints Field.
