Box Score The Saints rebounded from their overtime loss to UW-Superior in the regular season finale last year to win the UMAC postseason tournament 10 days later. But the loss to the Yellowjackets wouldn't be far from anyone's mind since that late October night, especially when the two teams were scheduled to begin their 2007 campaigns with a rematch.
Following a scoreless first half in which Superior out shot the Saints by a 12 to seven margin, St. Scholastica blazed through a second half scoring twice on seven shots while limiting the 'Jackets to one lone shot in a 2-0 victory.
Newcomer Cody Sveiven (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) gathered in a rebound off a shot from fellow freshman Dustin James (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) and pushed it past UWS goalkeeper Tony Sorenson for the opening score of the game in the 67th minute.
Seven minutes later St. Scholastica's Robbie Miller netted his first of the year after stepping into a passing lane to intercept a pass deep in Yellowjacket territory and sliding another goal behind Sorenson to give the Saints a two goal lead.
The game, as one might expect given the rivalry between the two schools, was chippy from the start as St. Scholastica's Kyle Hoffman (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Technical HS) picked up a yellow card just 11 minutes into the game. Sveiven picked up a yellow in the 28th minute before things started to unravel for UWS.
Nate Mikle received a red card in the 32nd minute, Gubio Henrique picked up a yellow three minutes later and Andy Olness closed out the first half for Superior with a yellow in the 40th minute.
Two more Yellowjackets added yellow cards in the second half and, down 2-0 late in the game, Henrique was awarded a red card with less than two minutes to play.
Adam Whitehead (Pickering, Ont./Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School) picked up the win in goal for the Saints (1-0-0) with four saves for his 20th career shutout. Sorenson took the loss for UWS (0-1-0) giving up two goals while saving four.
