For the second consecutive outing the Saints completed a win after trailing only in the opening minute of the game, this time leading from 49 seconds into their road game at Northland College all the way to the final buzzer in their 70-61 victory that opened the conference slate for both teams.
St. Scholastica (2-3, 1-0 UMAC) led the LumberJacks (1-5, 0-1 UMAC) by as many as nine points through the midpoint of the first half before the hosts would cut into the lead.
However, with 2:50 to play in the opening stanza and ahead by five, the Saints ran off 15 points in a row before Northland could score at the buzzer to stop the run.
By then it was probably too late as the Saints roughly maintained their 13-point halftime margin, 43-30, over the final 20 minutes until the waning moments of the second half when the hosts cut the lead to its final nine point margin.
St. Scholastica had a balanced offensive attack that saw four starters reach double-figures, and scoring within four total points of each other.
Brady Zubke (Laporte, Minn./Park Rapids Area HS) led the Saints with 15, pulling him to within four points of 1,000 career points. He also had seven rebounds to lead St. Scholastica.
Akente Ward (Milwaukee, Wis./St. Francis HS) netted 13 points in the win, Eric Langdon (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior HS) had 12, and Andrew Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) added 11.
Ryan Cannata from Northland led all scorers with 17 in the losing effort.
Saturday night's win was also coach David Staniger's 89th victory as the Saints head coach, pulling him closer to the all-time mark of 92 wins at the College held by John Nachtscheim (1985-93).
