For the first time since the 1995-96 season, St. Scholastica (2-3) earned a season sweep in their Bridge Rivalry with UW-Superior (1-4), taking Wednesday night's game in the Burns Wellness Commons by an 83-77 score.

The two teams met in the season opener for each with the Saints bringing home an 83-75 road victory.

In Wednesday night's affair, UWS scored the first basket of the game, then took a 4-2 lead after a pair of successful free throws from St. Scholastica's Andy Schmitz had tied things up.

A Brady Zubke (Laporte, Minn./Park Rapids Area HS) jumper knotted the score at 4-4 and with Troy Miller (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS)'s three-pointer 47 seconds later, the Saints grabbed a lead they wouldn't surrender the rest of the game.

The Saints went on a 9-0 run over a four minute span through the middle of the first half, increasing their lead to 17 over the visiting 'Jackets.

UWS was able to trim the margin down to eight at the half, but the Saints still took a 41-33 lead into the locker rooms.

The second half was much more even between the two teams from the Twin Ports as Superior whittled down the Saints lead to as few as three, but each time they got close, the Saints slammed the door.

After a UWS basket pulled the visitors to within six at 43-37, the Saints answered with a four point run.

The 'Jackets closed to within five at the 15:37 mark but a Zubke jumper and free throw completed a three point play to put the Saints back up by eight.

With 12:10 to play, a Dan Culy three-pointer pulled his UWS team the closest they'd been since the opening minutes of the game, 52-49, but once again the Saints responded. This time it was a pair of three pointers from the brothers act on the Saints roster, senior Andrew and freshman Danny Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS), that stretched the lead to nine.

The Yellowjackets made one last push, closing to within five with 2:32 to play, but Andrew Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS)' three-pointer quelled the come-back and the Saints held on for the season sweep with the victory.

Zubke led the Saints with 19 points while the elder Schmitz chipped in with 16 including 3-of-4 three-pointers. Zubke also had a game-high eight rebounds in the win.

UWS was led by Dwight Hill's 25 points in the losing effort. Three more Yellowjackets scored in double-figures but the visitors didn't receive much help from their bench as the Saints picked up 24 points from their subs while UWS added only 13.

The one sore spot for the Saints was their 24 turnovers, double that of the 'Jackets.

But the balanced scoring of the Saints attack, along with a 34 to 26 rebounding edge, proved to be too much for the 'Jackets to handle.
