In front of a small crowd due to the day long blizzard outside, and with leading scorer Whitney Latham (Clear Lake, Minn./Becker HS) in street clothes on the bench, the Saints found themselves down 47-42 to the visiting Lions from Finlandia University with just over 10 minutes to play on Tuesday night on the floor of the Burns Wellness Commons at St. Scholastica.
It was at that point the Saints begain their rally, a 25-7 run, that turned the tables and pushed St. Scholastica (2-5) to a 71-60 win over Finlandia (2-4).
Midway through the run sophomore guard Kirsten Haukom (Marshall, Minn./Marshall HS) hit a jumper to tie the score at 52-52 with seven minutes on the clock. Less than 30 seconds later Haukom hit another jumper that gave the Saints the lead after which they never trailed in picking up the non-conference victory.
Haukom finished with a game-high 22 points, along with six assists and three steals, also game-highs.
Sophomore Jess Nichols (Stillwater Minn./Stillwater HS) snared a game-high 14 rebounds -- eight on the offensive end -- and added 10 points of her own to the winning cause while Haukom grabbed seven rebounds herself.
Katie Christensen (Elk River, Minn./Elk River Senior HS) (11) and Ashley Lubbers (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls Community HS) (10) also reached double-figures in scoring for the Saints.
A trio of Lions collected 16 points apiece in the loss.
St. Scholastica had one of their best halves on the floor this season in the second half, hitting 47 percent of their shots helping them finish the game at 39 percent. Finlandia hit 38 percent from the field for the game.
One of the biggest differences in the game, besides Haukom's night, was the contributions by the St. Scholastica bench players who poured in 22 points. Finlandia, meanwhile, didn't collect a single point from their bench getting all their scoring from their starting five.
Senior captain Whitney Latham (Clear Lake, Minn./Becker HS), who had a game-high 19 points in the team's loss to UMD last Wednesday, was resting an injury and is expected to be back in the line-up the next time the Saints hit the floor.
Next up for the Saints is their conference-opener this Saturday evening. The team will travel to Ashland, Wis., where they will go up against the LumberJills from Northland College. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
