Postponed a day because of a Saturday night power outage, the Saints (3-5-3, 1-2-1 NCHA) simply had to wait a day in picking up their first conference win of the season, a 2-1 victory over host Lake Forest College (1-9-1, 0-4-0 NCHA) at the Forester's Alumni Memorial Rink on Sunday afternoon.
With the teams in the locker rooms dressing for Saturday's game, a severe ice storm took its toll on the power lines of Lake Forest's home rink knocking out the power and forcing the Saints to stay the extra night and play a rare Sunday afternoon matinee game.
The delay didn't seem to slow down St. Scholastica's Jordan Chong (North Vancouver, British Columbia/Dryden (SIJHL)), who scored both of his team's goals in the 2-2 tie at No. 5 St. Norbert Friday night, as the sophomore forward scored the first goal of the game on Sunday barely six minutes into the second period.
Peter Pfeffer notched a tying goal six minutes later, though, and the Saints and Forester's went into the second intermission tied at 1-1.
The low score wasn't for lack of effort as the Saints totalled 36 shots after two periods while Lake Forest had 25. And in a game with so many scoring opportunities it was -- depending on how you look at it -- either surprising or fitting that the next goal would come when one team was shorthanded.
With just 2:06 left to play, St. Scholastica took a holding penalty putting the Saints a man down for what would effectively be the rest of the game.
But for the fourth time this season the Saints pulled out a shorthanded score, this time with Trevor Geiger (Salmon Arm, British Columbia/Salmon Arm (BCHL)) getting one past Forester goalie Scott Campbell at the 18:58 mark. The Saints and goalie Steve Bounds (Airdrie, Alberta/Powell River (BCHL)) held off the hosts over the final 1:02 to come away with the win.
Bounds, making his second start in a row and only his second of the season, turned away 30 of 31 shots to register his first win of the year. On Friday night Bounds stopped 21 of 23 shots for the tie against St. Norbert.
Lake Forest's Campbell made a valiant effort in keeping his team in the game making 45 saves but taking the loss.
