Having lost a 1-point decision to Wisconsin-Superior earlier in the season when a buzzer-beating shot failed to fall, the Saints turned things around on Saturday afternoon in Superior, Wis., watching a Yellowjacket shot fall by the wayside at the buzzer in St. Scholastica's 61-58 win.
Through the first half St. Scholastica (3-6) had built a 12 point lead with 4:51 to go in the opening 20 minutes, but UWS (3-5) went on an 8-0 run to cut the Saints lead down to only 23-19.
The Saints still took a lead into the locker room, 29-24, but their once-large lead had now dwindled.
Neither team shot well in the first half, St. Scholastica hitting only 29 percent of their shots while UWS hit 38 percent.
The 'Jackets came out early in the second half to wrest the lead from the visiting Saints but nine lead changes and six ties later, a Kirsten Haukom (Marshall, Minn./Marshall HS) jumper and successful free throw completed a three point play to put St. Scholastica ahead 59-58 with 31 ticks of the clock showing on the scoreboard.
With only 15 seconds left, a UWS foul put senior Whitney Latham (Clear Lake, Minn./Becker HS) on the line where she cooly sank both free throws to increase the lead to three.
Now with the ball in Superior's hands, the chance to tie things up before the buzzer fell to Carissa Nord whose 3-pointer with one second left failed to find the bottom of the basket, sending the Saints to a victory that evened the season series with their bridge rivals at a game apiece.
Haukom led all scorers with 20 points including 7-of-13 from the field. Latham added 18 for the Saints in the win.
UWS was led by Allison Weld's 16 points. Two others chipped in with 12 each in the loss.
