Visiting St. Scholastica (3-5) only trailed 44-41 to the host Auggies from Augsburg College on Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis, but Augsburg (1-6) ruled the second half to capture their first win of the season by an 84-72 score.
The score was tied eight times in the first half and the lead changed hands three times before the Auggies would take their three point lead into the locker rooms at the intermission.
In the early going of the second half the Saints twice pulled to within one of the Auggies but at 13:12 to play and following a Brady Zubke (Laporte, Minn./Park Rapids Area HS) jumper that pulled St. Scholastica to within six at 57-51, Augsburg would break into a 12-0 run that broke the game open.
The hosts led by as many as 20 points twice in the half but the Saints fought back to within 11 with 1:01 to play but the Auggies never let the visitors from Duluth pull any closer in their eventual 12 point victory.
Both teams were hot in the opening half with the Saints hitting 57 percent of their shots, but the problem for CSS was Augsburg hit 69 percent of theirs.
In the second 20 minutes the Saints dipped to only 36 percent, 45 percent for the game, while Augsburg cooled off only slightly -- 55 percent for the half and 62 percent for the game.
Zubke led the Saints in scoring with 18 in the loss with Eric Langdon (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior HS) adding 13 and a team-high six rebounds.
Mike MacDonald (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS) had a career-best 12 points and three boards for the Saints while Andy Schmitz had eight assists.
Augsburg was led offensively by Jon Cassens' 20 points and Femi Solaja's 19. Solaja also had a game-high 10 rebounds in the win.
