OFFENSE EXPLODES IN WIN OVER SAINT MARY'S

Box Score

When the Saints goals come, they seem to come in bunches.

Down 4-1 to visiting Saint Mary's University on Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena, the Saints went on a scoring binge of six consecutive goals to rally for the 7-4 win, their first of the season.

Early in the first they gave up a 5-on-3 advantage to the Cardinals and Mike Glaesmer made the most of it, staking his team to a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later, though, St. Scholastica finished off a power play with a Rob Rodgers (Salmon Arm, British Columbia/Salmon Arm (BCHL)) score, his first as a Saint, which knotted the game at 1-1.

Saint Mary's took a page from the St. Scholastica book next, and scored three consecutive short-handed goals to take a 4-1 lead into the first intermission, even though they were out shot by a 19 to nine margin.

With Tyler Johnson (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks HS) taking over in goal for Zach Kleiman (Ottawa, Ontario/Quinnipiac Univ.), the Saints got stingy on defense -- the Cardinals registerd only three shots in the second period -- and productive on offense.

Joey Martini (Calgary, Alberta/Canmore (AJHL)) picked up his first goal of the year with a power play score at the 7:30 mark, Jordan Baird (Port McNeill, British Columbia/Victoria (BCHL)) added a power play goal less than two minutes later, then A.J. Tucker scored on a delayed penalty while the Saints had an extra attacker on the ice after Johnson skated to the bench.

In the span of eight minutes and six seconds, the Saints went from a three goal deficit and negative momentum, to a 4-4 tie and all of the games momentum tilted downhill towards the Cardinals goal.

The barrage of shots continued on Saint Mary's goalie Dan Smith, who faced 19 shots in the second period, as he saw 23 more in the third.

Shawn Bartlette (East Grand Forks, Minn./Bismark (NAHL)) picked up his first goal of the year early in the third, then Martini added a second of the night less than two minutes later, and late in the game Baird scored his team-leading fourth of the season for the final 7-4 score.

Smith saw 61 shots on the night and stopped 54, while Johnson (11 saves) and Kleiman (5 saves) had to face only 20 in the win.

Martini finished with two goals and two assist for a four-point night, Baird also had a pair of goals and added an assist, while Tucker finished with a goal and two assists.

St. Scholastica improves to 1-2-0 on the season while Saint Mary's drops to 0-1-1.
