St. Scholastica (1-1) fought back from a double-digit deficit in the second half, once even taking a one point lead, before dropping their home-opener to visiting Carleton College (1-0) by a 74-69 score on Tuesday night at the Burns Wellness Commons in Duluth, Minn.
The Saints jumped out to an early lead on the Knights in the game's opening minutes behind the 3-point shooting of senior captain Eric Langdon (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior HS) who nailed two of his six 3-point field goals in the first two minutes.
Carleton trailed for all but 52 seconds in the opening 12:53 but knotted things at 25-25 with 7:07 to play in the half. They traded the lead with the Saints over the next minute before closing out the half with a 35-33 edge.
At the beginning of the second half of action, Saints shooting grew cold as the Knights found back-door play after back-door play to stretch out to a 12 point lead three separate times between the 14:55 and 13:42 marks.
St. Scholastica whittled down the deficit and took the lead at 60-59 with a Kyle Allen (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls HS) jumper from in close to the right of the basket.
The Knights re-gained the lead with a pair of free throws from Jeremy Sutherland then hung on the rest of the way to win their season opener and deal the Saints their first loss of the season.
Langdon finished with a team-high 24 points on the night while Carleton's Zach Johnson led all scorers with 26.
Johnson also had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Knights. Brady Zubke (Laporte, Minn./Park Rapids Area HS) led the Saints with eight boards in the loss.
The Saints have a week off before their next game, a home match-up against non-conference foe UW-Eau Claire on Wed., Nov. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Burns Commons.
