Box Score St. Scholastica advanced to the UMAC Tournament championship game for the sixth time in seven seasons with their 2-0 semifinal victory over Northland College at Public Schools Stadium early Friday morning.
Melissa Entinger broke a scoreless tie in the 41
st minute with her fifth goal of the season, taking a feed from
Ellyn Litecky (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and pasting a shot into the corner to put the Saints ahead 1-0.
Though St. Scholastica (18-2-1, 14-0-0 UMAC) out shot the LumberJills 15 to three in the half, they still took only that one goal lead into the intermission.
Early in the second half St. Scholastica's
Sarah Bartlette (East Grand Forks, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's) increased the lead to two with a corner kick that crossed the goal from left to right and curled inside the right post.
Northland had an unsuccessful breakaway in the opening minutes of the game but had to wait until the 81
st minute to threaten again. Saints keeper
Kelly Momsen (Austin, Minn./Austin HS) made a diving stop of a Sarah Strobino header to preserve the shutout.
The victory moves the Saints one step closer to the UMAC Championship and a possible NCAA tournament bid.
The conference tournament final will take place at PSS on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. when the Saints will square off against Minnesota-Morris, a 2-0 winner over Northwestern College in the other semifinal match-up.
