The 2007-08 season kicked off with an 83-78 road win for the Saints (1-0) over local rival UW-Superior (0-1) on Friday night at the Yellowjackets' Martorelli Gymnasium.
The 'Jacket took a 41-39 lead into the half but the Saints outscored the hosts 44 to 37 in the second half to pick up the win.
Eric Langdon (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior HS) led the Saints with 20 points while Andrew Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) added 17 and had a team-high six rebounds in the victory.
Schmitz had to relish hitting the hardwood again as the 2006 UMAC Tournament MVP had to sit out the 2006-07 season following major surgery. The game at Superior was his first action since helping to lead the team to their first of two consecutive conference postseason tournament titles way back in February of 2006.
St. Scholastica shot a blistering 68 percent from the field in the first half, they simply didn't get as many looks at the basket as Superior had in shooting 31-of-57 for an almost as sizzling 59 percent.
It was the Saints who kept up their hot hand in the second half rally, hitting 62 percent of their shots while pressuring Superior to a significant drop in accuracy down to only 50 percent.
Next up for St. Scholastica will be their home-opener on Tuesday night, Nov. 20, with a 7 p.m. match-up against Carleton College.
