No. 1 WHEATON PUTS AN END TO SAINTS NCAA RUN

They were No.1 and undefeated for a reason.

The Saints found out why, early and unfortunately often, as Wheaton (Ill.) College pounded out a 7-1 win in the second round of the 2007 NCAA national tournament.

The Thunder scored four goal in the first half, shattering the hopes of a Saints team that had allowed a program-low eight goals all season for a remarkable 0.34 goals per game average.

Keeper Kelly Momsen (Austin, Minn./Austin HS) was on the end of a barrage of shots that usually happens to her counterpart in goal. Wheaton had 50 shots in the contest, Momsen making a career-high 21 saves of the 28 on goal.

The potent Saints offense, 93 goals on the year, was held without a shot in the opening 45 minutes.

Wheaton opened the second half with a score only 20 after the opening whistle to stretch their lead to 5-0. They would score another before the Saints found some offensive life -- from an unlikely character.

Senior defender Becky Fisher (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) rocketed a 25 yard shot that snuck under the crossbar in the 79th minute to avert the shutout and score only the second goal in her collegiate career.

St. Scholastica (19-3-2) closes out their year with the loss but their successful season included both the regular season and conference tournament titles as well as their first NCAA tournament bid.

Wheaton (23-0-0) moves into the third round where they'll face an as yet to be determined opponent.
