LATE GOAL PUSHES AUGGIES PAST SAINTS

Box Score

St. Scholastica lost a taught game at Augsburg College on Wednesday night, one that ended in heartbreak for the Saints who fell 1-0 to the host Auggies.

The game remained scoreless until the Saints committed a late foul deep in their defensive end that gave Augsburg a penalty kick opportunity. With only 4:29 showing on the clock, Augsburg's Kelsey Duerr used the PK to his advantage and scored his third goal of the season, which proved to be the only goal of the game.

The 1-0 loss for the Saints (9-2-0) broke their eight game win streak, while ending the Auggie's (7-4-0) two game losing streak.

St. Scholastica out shot the Auggie's in the first half, seven to three but Augsburg improved their play in the second 45 minutes to out shoot St. Scholastica 11 to seven. The Auggies had three corner kicks to St. Scholastica's one in the deciding second half.

St. Scholastica's fouls total outnumbered Augsburg as they had accumulated 15 fouls to Augsburg's ten in the game. In the second half alone, St. Scholastica had 11 fouls to Augsburg's three. The fouls were what hurt most in the end.

But not all of the numbers were one sided. The Saints and the Auggie's both had 14 shots in the game. However, St. Scholastica had more shots on net, with four, than did Augsburg who had only one other than the penalty kick.

Despite the fouls, the Saints played well. They held the Auggie's scoreless for the majority of the game and had opportunities themselves that they couldn't take advantage of.

Senior goalkeeper Adam Whitehead (Pickering, Ont./Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School) registered one save for St. Scholastica in the loss. Donnie McCarthy, Augsburg's junior goalkeeper, had four saves in his team's victory. It was his first time playing this season but his third career shutout.
