Box Score Saturday afternoon's 5-0 win in Ashland, Wis., over the host LumberJills from Northland College pushed St. Scholastica's consecutive regular season Upper Midwest Athletic Conference win streak to an amazing 43 games as they completed the UMAC portion of their schedule with a perfect 14-0-0 mark for the second consecutive year.
They completed the 2005 and 2004 seasons with unblemished 7-0-0 UMAC marks and began their unbeaten string with a defeat of Northwestern College in 2003.
At Northland on Saturday the Saints jumped to the lead in only the games second minute as junior transfer Sara Olson (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC) took a pass from junior Robin Johnson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School) and buried her shot past LumberJills goalie Brittany Ballwanz for a 1-0 score before anyone broke a sweat.
Still warming up, the Saints scored again a minute later as sophomore transfer Sarah Bartlette (East Grand Forks, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's) scored off a feed from sophomore Angie Groh (Andover, Minn./St. Francis HS).
Ahead 2-0 and dominating play -- the Saints would out shoot the 'Jills 15 to one in the half -- Olson racked up her second of the day and 13th of the season with a score in the 24th minute, again off an assist from Johnson.
Less than three minutes after the opening touch of the second half it was Johnson's turn to find the net as she scored her team-leading 14th goal of the year to put the Saints ahead 4-0. Sophomore defender Cortney McKenzie (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) earned the assist.
The clock wound down on the regular season's final game for the Saints and 'Jills but not before senior Betsey Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks Senior HS) picked up a goal with an assist from junior Kristen Stangel (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) in the game's 85th minute for the contest's final score.
Saints keeper Kelly Momsen (Austin, Minn./Austin HS) had a pair of saves in the victory, her 10th shutout of the season, tying the program's single-season record which she set just last year. Momsen owns the career shut out record for St. Scholastica with 24.
St. Scholastica (17-2-1, 14-0-0 UMAC) will enter next week's UMAC postseason tournament as the No. 1 seed and host. Their semifinal game will be against Northland (6-9-2, 6-6-2 UMAC), the tourney's No. 4 seed. The other semifinal will be between No. 2 seed Minnesota-Morris (12-5-0, 11-2-0 UMAC) and No. 3 Northwestern College (8-8-1, 8-5-1 UMAC) in the Friday-Saturday, Nov. 2-3, tournament played at Duluth's Public Schools Stadium.
