Box Score Though their eight game unscored upon streak ended with a Northwestern College goal in the opening period, the Saints' 4-1 win on Friday afternoon in Rosemount, Minn., upped their current win streak to 11 games and clinched the 2007 UMAC regular season championship.
With Northwestern's first shot on goal in the game on Friday, Kyrie Jorgenson scored in the 7th minute to give her Eagles (7-8-1, 7-5-0 UMAC) an early 1-0 lead and put and end to a streak of 762 minutes that the Saints (15-2-1, 12-0-0 UMAC) had kept opponents from finding the back of the goal netting.
Five minutes later the Saints knotted things up, though, on an unassisted goal from Sarah Bartlette (East Grand Forks, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's), the sophomore's 11th score of the season.
St. Scholastica kept pounding away at Eagle keeper Rebecca Miller who had to make three saves on four Saints shots before Kristen Stangel (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS), from Sara Olson (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC), gave her Saints the lead with a goal in the 21st minute.
The Saints dominated play so decisively that Northwestern's second shot of the game came with less than a minute remaining in the first half.
Another sign of their overwhelming play came just 74 seconds into the second half when Olson scored off a cross from Stangel on the half's first shot to increase the lead to 3-1.
Less than three minutes later Angie Groh (Andover, Minn./St. Francis HS) capped the St. Scholastica scoring, with another Olson assist, for the game's final three goal winning margin.
Northwestern mustered one more shot in the game, with less than three minutes remaining, while St. Scholastica peppered Miller with five more after Groh's score.
Keeper Kelly Momsen (Austin, Minn./Austin HS) picked up the win for the Saints with what proved to be an easy day between the pipes, making one save following the game's initial shot on goal.
Olson's four point day pushed the junior transfer into a tie with Shannon Kresky (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) for the team's scoring lead with 32 points, and her 11 goals on the year trails only Robin Johnson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School)'s 12.
St. Scholastica entered the game with a two game lead over second place Minnesota-Morris (9-2-0 UMAC) with three conference games remaining but the win over Northwestern guarantees the Saints the regular season crown by virtue of owning the head-to-head tie-breaker with their season sweep over the Cougars from Morris. It also means the Saints will host the postseason conference tournament on November 3rd and 4th.
