Box Score Though the scoreboard only read 1-0 in favor of the Saints (14-2-1) on Tuesday night in their game at Augsburg College (7-6-3) in Minneapolis, St. Scholastica head coach
Dave Reyelts still found a little disappointment in their road victory over the Auggies.
"If we lacked anything tonight, it was finishing (plays)," Reyelts said. "We hit two posts and could have scored on a couple of other corners that bounced through their box. This really should have been 2 or 3 to zero at the end," he added.
The game's lone goal came late in the first half on a long counter-attack by the Saints.
Sara Olson (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC) drove up field with possession and found teammate Sarah Bartlette (East Grand Forks, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's) on the right wing. Bartlette centered a cross for Shannon Kresky (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) who buried her shot to give St. Scholastica a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute.
Though Augsburg out shot the Saints 10 to eight in the half, St. Scholastica was the team to take the lead into the halftime break.
Playing in their third game in five days, the Saints still managed a fast pace and physical style that helped control the outcome from the start.
"Not until (Augsburg) brought everyone forward for the last minute of play was I nervous they were even going to create a quality chance," said Reyelts about the performance from his tired team. "Our defense is playing so well right now, I get concerned that our keepers will lose focus, but (Kelly) Momsen stayed awake long enough to shut down their last second desperation attack."
St. Scholastica had five shots in the second half before Augsburg would register their first, 24 minutes after coming out of the locker room. The late push Reyelts referred to resulted in three Auggie shots over the final 7:40 of game action.
Momsen made four saves in each half but none required extraordinary effort. The shutout victory was her eighth of the season and 22nd of her career.
Though still wishing for a few more goals, in the end Reyelts wasn't about to let the lack of a few more lights shining on the scoreboard detract from his thoughts about the game and his players. "Our ladies played great tonight. It was a gutsy effort for a tired crew!" Reyelts exclaimed.
St. Scholastica has defeated Augsburg twice in a row with Tuesday's win and are unbeaten over their last four contests (3-0-1). The career mark between the two teams now stands at 7-3-1 in favor of the Saints.
