Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was outscored 15-2 in the final 7:33 as it fell to the University of Northwestern 63-50 in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinal game Thursday at the Reif Gymnasium.
With the Eagles up 9-6 early, Coach
Stacy Deadrick called a timeout. The Saints responded out of that timeout with an 8-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. Northwestern answered with its own 8-0 run to go back up by three with 10 minutes to go.
The Eagles led by as much as eight, but CSS got back in with a 10-2 run to tie the game for the fifth time. A Mollie Sir 3-pointer would be enough to give the Eagles a 32-31 halftime lead.
The Saints bench was the story in the first half scoring 16 of the team's 31 points. However, CSS committed eight turnovers, which led to 11 Northwestern points. Both teams shot below 37 percent for the half.
The Eagles had a three point lead three minutes into the second half, but the Saints went on another 8-0 run capped off by a
Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) 3-pointer to give St. Scholastica a 43-38 lead.
Northwestern re-took the lead with less than nine minutes remaining until
Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) drained a 3-pointer to tie the game for the eighth time at 48-48 with 7:33 to go.
After a Northwestern timeout, Jessica Fife scored six straight points to make it 54-48.
Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) connected on a runner to make it 54-50 with less than four minutes to go, but that would be CSS's final points of the game.
The Eagles scored the final nine points to go on to win 63-50. Northwestern will travel to the University of Minnesota Morris for the UMAC Championship game Saturday night.
The Saints shot only 23 percent in the second half to finish at 30 percent for the game. The Eagles shot 34 percent for the game and were 12-of-15 from the free throw line. Both teams had identical rebounding numbers of 15 offensive rebounds and 32 defensive rebounds.
Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) led the Saints with 10 points. Hovick followed with nine points and seven rebounds.
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Fife led the Eagles with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The Saints will say goodbye to a pair of seniors in
Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) and
Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS). Frase played in 80 games in three seasons with the Saints and recorded 857 points, averaging 10.7 points per game. McKernon played in 86 games over four seasons and averaged 7.3 points and 42 blocks in her career.
