ST. PAUL (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team could only manage a .131 hitting percentage, while the University of Northwestern had a .325 percentage as the Eagles took care of the Saints in three sets Saturday 25-12, 25-17, 25-23 at the Ericksen Center.
CSS registered the first two points of the match, but a 7-0 run by Northwestern midway through the set separated the two squads and the Eagles took it 25-12.
Northwestern scored the first four points of the second set and despite the Saints getting within two at 12-10, the Eagles pulled away in the latter half to go up two sets 25-17.
St. Scholastica got off to a great start in the third set and led 12-6 at one point. However, the Eagles crawled back in and cut the lead to one at 14-13. CSS then led 20-18, before the Eagles scored six of the next seven points to take control and ultimately take the match 25-23.
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) led the Saints with 11 kills, while
Noelle Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) added nine kills.
Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had 11 assists. Lindsey Peterson and Hallie Mueth each had 12 kills to pace the Eagles, who remains unbeaten in league play at 9-0.
The Saints (11-10, 6-3 UMAC) will have a week off from conference play and will be in action next Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Fall Classic. CSS will play three matches on the day starting with Saint Mary's University at 12:15 p.m.
