ST. PETER, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team fell to Division II's Minnesota State-Moorhead this morning, but came out on top against Minnesota State, Mankato in the afternoon on Saturday.
CSS 4, MSU-Moorhead 5
The Saints began the day with a close 5-4 loss against Minnesota State University-Moorhead.
CSS got off to a good start, taking two of the three doubles matches.
Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Jessica Solberg (Bemidji, Minn. /Bemidji HS) won 8-2 at the No. 1 spot, while
Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) and
Katie Kingston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) won at No. 2 by a score of 8-5.
In singles action, the Dragons won the first two matches to take a 3-2 lead in the dual. Solberg then won at the No. 2 spot in a super-breaker by scores of 3-6, 6-2, (10-8) to even the dual.
After Moorhead won at the No. 6 spot, Scanlan won straight sets at the No. 3 spot 6-3, 6-3. Unfortunately, CSS would drop the final match at the No. 4 spot and lose the dual 5-4.
CSS 7, MSU, Mankato 2
The Saints bounced back from their loss in the morning to defeat Minnesota State, Mankato 7-2 in the afternoon.
CSS swept all three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Gunderson and Scanlan won 8-2. The No. 2 team of Solberg and
Alexa Herbst (Foley, Minn. /Foley HS) were victorious 9-7. The No. 3 team of
Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) and Kingston won 8-3.
In singles action, Scanlan won at the No. 2 spot 6-3, 7-5. Solberg came from behind to win in a super-breaker at the No. 3 spot 4-6, 6-3, (10-6).
Kelsey Geiger (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) won at No. 5 singles 6-1, 7-5. The final winner on the day was
Halle Nystrom (Fargo, N.D. /Fargo North HS) at the No. 6 spot 6-3, 6-4.
The Saints (4-4) will next be in action down in Orlando, Fla. over Spring Break. CSS will open with Saint Ambrose next Sunday morning.
