Becky Huberty (Lena, Wis./Lena HS) became the women's track & field program's first All-American by placing fourth in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships on Friday at Roger Harring Stadium.
Huberty is competing in her third consecutive NCAA Championships event, becoming the first CSS Athlete to do so. Her first attempt in the hammer throw was only 49.63m, but her second attempt got her into the finals with a toss of 54.25m.
She then would foul on two of her three attempts in the finals, but the one that counted (fifth attempt) was the one that got her fourth place overall uncorking a toss of 181'9” (55.51m).
Huberty becomes the first All-American in the women's track & field program's history (indoor/outdoor) and just the second CSS track & field athlete to earn All-American accolades (Wendell Booth, 2009 Indoor Championships).
Samantha Loew of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the event with a mark of 191'0” (58.21m). Seniors took up the top two spots, while juniors took up spots three-six, including Huberty.
Huberty will compete again tomorrow in the shot put beginning at 1 p.m.
Rachel Miller (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) will wrap up competition for the Saints at 3:20 p.m. as she competes in the triple jump.
