What had become a powerful five-match win streak in which the Saints defeated opponents by an average score of 8-1 ended quickly on Thursday afternoon in Orlando as Methodist (N.C.) University, ranked 10th in their Region, soundly defeated St. Scholastica 9-0.
The Monarchs got off to a quick start with an 8-0 defeat of St. Scholastica's No. 1 doubles pairing of Paula Beckermann (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) and Katie Motley (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS).
It became an even tougher day for the Saints when the No. 2 tandem of Casey Ruberto (Thunder Bay, Ont./Hammarskjold HS) and Katrina Sacchetti (Virginia, Minn./Virginia Secondary) -- winners of eight in a row after dropping their first match of the season -- fell by an 8-5 score.
Methodist didn't let up in singles action sweeping all six flights for the match win that improved their season mark to 6-1.
Even Motley, who came into the match on Thursday with a perfect 9-0 record, couldn't pull off a win in singles, though she battled Kaitlin Flaherty into a third set super tie-break before falling in defeat.
The Saints, 7-3 on the year now, will close out their spring break trip to Orlando with one more match, a 9 a.m. contest on Friday, March 7, against Saint Mary's (Ind.) College.
