St. Scholastica opened their 2008 schedule against NCAA Division II St. Cloud State on Sunday afternoon, putting together a strong showing in singles action but falling in all three doubles matches in a 6-3 loss to the Huskies on the Gold's Gym Tennis Center courts.
Last season the Saints fell by the identical score but won only at the No. 6 singles slot and No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions.
This time around they captured singles victories at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 6, but dropped each of the three doubles matches in succombing to the host Huskies.
Sophomore Paula Beckermann (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) has stepped into the No. 1 singles slot for the Saints this season and came away with her first win there, defeating Dawn Olson from St. Cloud 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) in a lengthy three set battle.
Fellow sophomore Katie Motley (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) rolled to a quick 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3, and Angela Shields (Pengilly, Minn./Greenway HS) picked up the third singles win with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Doubles play doomed the upset attempt by the Saints, though, with the closest match coming in the No. 2 slot where the tandem of Katrina Sacchetti (Virginia, Minn./Virginia Secondary) and Casey Ruberto (Thunder Bay, Ont./Hammarskjold HS) fell 6-8 to Jacque Doll and Kelly Freese of SCSU.
The day isn't quite over for the Saints as they will step back on the court later in the afternoon on Sunday to take on Concordia-Moorhead in a neutral site match at the Gold's Center.
