Stein came to St. Scholastica in January 1978 to teach chemistry and a couple of months later was hired to coach the school’s first-ever volleyball team. In eight seasons coaching the Saints he accumulated 144 wins, including back-to-back 30-win seasons in 1983 and 1984. His .600 winning percentage is still the best in program history. Stein guided the Saints to the program’s first winning record in 1981 and then led the team to a 31-12 record and a first place Midwestern Women’s Collegiate Conference (MWCC) finish in 1983. That season, the Saints ultimately captured the program’s first of three National Little College Athletic Association (NLCAA) National Championship. Stein’s volleyball team followed that in 1984 with another MWCC title and NLCAA title with an impressive 32-3 record. In Stein’s final season as head coach in 1985, the Saints once again captured the MWCC championship, but settled for third in the NLCAA Tournament.
