Courchaine was the netminder for St. Scholastica's two NAIA National Men's Hockey Championships in 1975 and '77. He was named the NAIA National Tournament Most Valuable Player in the 1977 and was twice named to the all-tournament team. In the 1977 National Tournament he tied the record for the most saves (97) in the three games. The three-time NAIA All-American ranks third in career saves (2,016) and shutouts (4) and is fourth in career save percentage (.885) in program history. Courchaine was also recognized in the April 25, 1977 issue of Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd column.
