DULUTH, Minn. – After a nearly two-and-a-half-hour game with 58 penalty minutes and 98 stoppages, the St. Scholastica Saints men’s hockey team emerged victorious over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers by a 6-2 final score Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.

Riley Riddell (Jr.-Wawota, Sask.) got the Saints on the board first, tipping in a shot by Jeremy Dawes (So.-Winnipeg, Man.) at the 11:40 mark of the first period. Rob Rodgers (Sr.-Salmon Arm, B.C.) also had an assist on the score.

The 1-0 score held through the end of the first, despite 25 combined shots in the period. As matching coincidental penalties expired at 3:24 in the second, the Pointers took advantage of the four-on-four open ice by tying the score with a Jon Madden score.

CSS was quick to retake the lead as Aaron Spotts (Sr.-Spokane, Wash.) scored a short-handed tally less than one minute later at 4:16, as he and helper Jordan Chong (Sr.-North Vancouver, B.C.), made good on a two-on-one breakaway. They reversed their roles two minutes later, as Chong scored an even-strength goal to put the Saints up 3-1, with Spotts on the assist.

Joel Langevin (Fr.-Nanaimo, B.C.) scored the final goal of the second period with the Saints on the powerplay at 11:54. His fellow frosh, Tyler Miller (Fr.-Fort Frances, Ont.) and Brett Corcoran (Fr.-Parksville, B.C.) had the assists.

Dawes netted a goal early in the third, seemingly securing victory for the Saints with assists going to Riddell and Miller, but the Pointers were able to close the gap slightly as Kent Detlefson made good on a defensive lapse by the Saints, scoring on a breakaway with about seven minutes remaining.

The two teams battled through 13 penalties in the third period, and the Saints made good on their second powerplay of the evening, finishing 2-for-8 with an extra man. Corcoran scored the powerplay tally with an assist by Miller. Stevens Point was 0-for-6 with the extra man.

The Pointers outshot the Saints 41-to-38, but Zach Kleiman (Sr.-Ottawa, Ont) continued to be a stonewall in net, allowing just two goals while stopping 39 shots in the victory. Thomas Speer took the loss for the Pointers, giving up four goals before being pulled for Nick Graves in the second. Each man made 16 saves for Stevens Point.

The Saints will be at bridge rival University of Wisconsin-Superior on Thursday night. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC.
