ABCA All-Midwest Region Teams

DULUTH, Minn. – St. Scholastica senior right-hander Adian Kummet (Sr.-Brainerd, Minn.) and junior first baseman Sean Claugherty (Jr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) have been named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) NCAA Division III All-Midwest Region first team; it was announced recently.

Other Saints earning all-region accolades were Peter Burg (Sr.-St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral), who was a second team selection, and Brian Marshik (So.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View), who was a third team choice.

Kummet, who was named a second team ABCA All-American and an honorable mention All-American by D3baseball.com, went 6-2 in his senior campaign with three saves. This is the fourth straight year that he has received all-region honors as he was a third team all-region choice in 2006 and 2007 and a second team selection in 2008.

According to the most recent NCAA Division III baseball statistics, Kummet ranks ninth in the nation with a 1.87 earned run average, sixth with 5.77 hits allowed per nine innings, and 14th with 11.39 strikeouts per nine innings. He finished with 73 strikeouts in 57.2 innings.

Claugherty earns first team All-Midwest Region laurels for the second consecutive year. Opponents knew to avoid Claugherty’s bat this season as he is currently fourth in Division III with 44 walks and is seventh with 1.05 base on balls per game. He batted .393 with three home runs and 39 RBIs. Claugherty had a .593 slugging percentage, a .545 on-base percentage, and also was 10-for-10 on stolen base attempts.

Left-handed pitcher Peter Burg earns second team all-region honors after being named to the first team last season. Burg was 9-0 in 12 appearances and had a 3.01 earned run average. He struck out 47 in 68.2 innings. His nine victories have him tied for 13th in the nation. Even if batters reached base, Burg was deadly on the mound as he had 12 pickoffs on the year.

Brian Marshik earns third team All-Midwest Region accolades as a second baseman. Marshik is second in the country with a .595 on-base percentage. He is fifth with a 1.06 base on balls per game. Marshik led the Saints with a .431 batting average and a .603 slugging percentage in 36 games. He also stole 12 bases on the campaign.

Matt Schuld of the University of St. Thomas was named the Midwest Region’s Pitcher of the Year, while Kyle Johnson of Concordia-Moorhead was named the position player of the year.
